Out For A Walk 2014

 Out For A Walk -      2014
Having previously worked with Adrian on two major public artworks, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council had no hesitation in inviting him to undertake a sensitive commission working with the family of one of their late colleagues.

Councillor Ken Keith passed away in 2012 after a varied and successful life that culminated in being instrumental in the building of Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park in Merseyside. He had also been involved in establishing Stadt Moers country park and, with the blessing of his family, former colleagues raised money for a memorial to celebrate his life.

Adrian held workshops at the two local primary schools Ken’s children had attended and where he had been a governor, within walking distance of the newly opened Leisure & Culture Park. The Keith family discussed the project with Adrian and together they decided the workshops would focus on the poems & drawings of Edward Lear, who worked in his early life at the nearby Knowsley Hall.
The schoolchildren wrote poems and made little wire models inspired by Lear’s work. One particular piece ‘The Table & The Chair’ seemed to resonate with Councillor Keith’s family and inspired the design of the sculpture. The finished artwork ‘Out For A Walk’ celebrates Ken’s love of the great outdoors and features a verse specially written by Adrian:

He met a chair & table

Walking as fast as they were able’
