Catching Air 2013

Catching Air - 2013
Adrian was commissioned by Manchester City Council to create a sculpture for a new BMX/skate/scooter park in Newton Heath. He worked closely with the Neighbourhood Regeneration Team and the Friends of Brookdale Park Community Group, then developed the design proposal in art workshops at Briscoe Lane Primary School and two local youth centres.

True to his long-standing belief that as many local people as possible should be given the chance to be involved in such projects, Adrian then set up an open-air exhibition of the design proposals and consulted all the park users who came over to have a look, including dozens of young people enjoying the new skatepark facilities.

Fortunately everyone loved the design and many of the young people came back to watch the sculpture being installed. The sculpture captures the movement of a BMX ‘catching air’ as it takes off from a quarter pipe – a 3-dimensional stop-motion action sequence that echoes the exciting stunts performed in the park.
