Hazel Grove Sculpture 2012

 Hazel Grove Sculpture - 2012
Situated a couple of miles out of Stockport alongside the busy A6 road to Buxton, this monumental sculpture creates a stunning landmark as you enter or leave the district of Hazel Grove. The forms change dramatically as you drive past or walk around the artwork.

Inspired by the agricultural history of the area, from one viewpoint it forms the image of a single coppiced Hazel bush, cultivated in the past for fencing & building construction. Then it changes to a flowing mass of branches, before opening out to an avenue of seven individual trees – a Hazel grove.

Adrian was selected for the commission on the strength of his initial design proposal and scale model. He consulted hundreds of local people by holding ‘meet the artist’ public displays in the nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket, the sponsors of the project, and received unanimous approval of the design.
He then worked extensively with structural engineers on the technical design of the sculpture, an unusual and at times difficult challenge to translate an audacious idea in maquette form into a safe and long-lasting public sculpture. But they devised an elegant solution, were granted planning permission and the fabrication work was undertaken by several local companies under Adrian’s direction.
